Our museum, which was established in1939, can be defined as a museum of work and social history. We are based in Montreuil near Paris in an old house which belonged to a manufacturer from the 19th century. Our collections date back to the French Revolution. They provide socialist, communist and anarchist artifacts as well as archives dating from that period until the end of the twentieth century. We have trade union archives too.Our rich collection is composed of sculptures, paintings , lithographs, posters and newspapers. Our museum has been labelled « Musée de France » by the French state. Our museum is the only one in France intertwines the history of work and the history of organisations that workers created for themselves during all these decades and centuries. Our cultural and scientific activities are recognized by scientific, university and scholar communities. The museum houses temporary exhibitions and documentation center. Our exhibitions include gender and postcolonial studies too. We receive researchers, schoolchildren and all publics. The museum is directed by an association with the help of the municipality of Montreuil, the Seine-Saint-Denis district and the French Ministry of Culture.
