5000 m2 of history and histories of Man’s relationship to the land, the river and the sea.
10 million Euro have been invested in the old preserve factory Feu Hermanos and Portimão Museum – 5000 m2 that display the city’s and the region´s historic, ethnographic and industrial heritage in the permanent exhibition called “Portimão – Territory and Identity”.
The entry in on river Arade’s side, where the fish was downloaded and taken to the room were it would be beheaded, the “heart” of the ancient factory. Here the washing and transport system devices were restored as well as the salt tanks and there were put figures representing the preservers. In the central nave central, we still find an imposing machine that was used to print on metal plates. There are also on display underwater pieces – cannions and amphoras.
The community is highlighted, especially through objects of the most famous portimonense (citizen of Portimão): Manuel Teixeira Gomes, writr, President of the Republic between 1923 and 1925. Amongst other things of his everyday life, there is the Roman bust, sculpture made in bronze next to which he was photographed in 1920, I his working office when he was in London as a diplomat.
The museum does also comprise temporary exhibitions rooms, a documentation centre (the region’s most modern), one auditorium and a restoration room.
